The 2017 Oscars Nominations Are In

No surprise there, then

By Tory Kingdon

The day of reckoning has arrived. At precisely 1:18pm GMT, a bright and early 05:18am in Los Angeles, the nominees for the 89th annual Academy Awards were announced. The Academy decided to bypass the usual news conference this year, instead live streaming the announcement with a few Oscar-winning Hollywood stars describing their own experience - Brie Larsson nearly passed out when she was nominated for Room apparently - before reading out the names of the 2017 Oscars nominees.

With all the talk that you might as well just go home if you’re not in La La Land, it’s not surprising to see it included in 14 categories. The modern musical hit now equals the Oscars record set by All About Eve in 1951 and followed by Titanic in 1998.

Congratulations to the amazing Meryl Streep, who now becomes the most nominated actress in Oscars history. We’re pleased to see Natalie Portman also in the running for Best Actress for her portrayal of Jackie Kennedy in Jackie. Could either of them steal it from Emma Stone?

After last year’s controversy of #OscarsSoWhite it’s refreshing to see Naomi Harris and Marhershala Ali both nominated for Moonlight, the story of a young man coming to terms with his sexuality in the drug-filled streets of Miami. The film is also up for Best Picture and Best Cinematography. Octavia Spencer is also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Hidden Figures and Denzel Washington for Best Actor for his role in Fences.

Casey Affleck, nominated for his role in the brooding drama Manchester by the Sea could also prove to be fierce competition for Ryan Gosling in the Best Actor Category. But we can't say we're not disappointed that Tom Hanks isn't in the running for playing real-life Hudson River plane crash hero Sully. He was last nominated in 2001.

Now all that remains to be seen is who picks up the golden statues on the night. The awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on the 26th February.
