Apparently Working A 9-5 Is Shortening Our Life Expectancy... Wait, What?!

Dolly Parton has always made us feel kind of alright about working a 9-5, but recent research has suggested that eight hours sat at a desk is actually shortening our life expectancy. Yeah. By not getting up off our arses, and away from the laptop to engage in at least an hour of physical activity per day, our risk of dying can increase from 6.8% to 9.9%

But, before you start freaking out, the team of international experts investigating the risk of death for those sitting for periods longer than eight hours a day, found that just sixty minutes of exercise can eliminate those (pretty scary) odds altogether.

The paper, published in the Lancet, highlighted the risks of leading a largely sedentary lifestyle, and found that an hour of 'moderate intensity' exercise, such as walking or cycling was enough to offset the damaging effects of sitting for extended periods of time. And that's not just restricted to your office space - watching the entire season of Making A Murderer, and not leaving the couch will also contribute to the problem.

Lead author Prof Ulf Ekelund, from the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences and Cambridge University, said:

'You don’t need to do sport, you don’t need to go to the gym. It’s OK doing some brisk walking, maybe in the morning, during lunchtime, after dinner in the evening. You can split it up over the day, but you need to do at least one hour.'

'It’s not easy to do one hour of physical activity a day but... the average TV viewing time in adults in the UK today is 3hrs 6mins or something like that, more than three hours,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s too much to ask that just a little bit of those three hours may be devoted to physical activity.'

The message is clear folks, if you are putting in any kind of desk-overtime and sitting for long periods of time, you need to start getting active.

Why not try some of team InStyle's easy office work-out hacks to get you started?

Why Hillary Clinton's Acceptance Speech Is The Most *Fist Pump* Thing You'll See Today

If you haven't already seen Hillary Clinton's acceptance speech at the final night of the DNC, then do yourselves a favor. Watch it. If anyone was ever in any doubt about Hillary's suitability for America's presidency, all haters were momentarily silenced by her powerful oration, as she made history by becoming the first woman to make a bid for the White House.

Taking to the podium on the final night of the party's convention in Philadelphia, Hillary was quick to  mention the 'huge challenges' that America faced, and that 'powerful forces' were threatening to tear the country apart. She recognised opponent Bernie Sanders' incredible effort to reach out to America's youth, praising his ethos and how he inspired a whole new generation of voters.

'Bernie, your campaign inspired millions of Americans, particularly the young people who threw their hearts and souls in our primary. You've put economic social justice issues front and center, where they belong. And to all of your supporters here and around the country, I want you to know: I heard you. Your cause is our cause.'

And (because she's a badass) Hillary was more than happy to throw some serious shade at Republican rival Donald Trump. The message was clear. You don't scare me.

'Don't believe anyone who says, 'I alone can fix it,'' she stated.  'Isn't [Donald Trump] forgetting troops on the front lines? Police officers who run toward danger? Doctors and nurses who care for us? Teachers who change lives? Entrepreneurs who see possibilities in every problem? Mothers who lost children to violence and are building a movement to keep other kids safe? He's forgetting every last one of us. Americans don't say, 'I alone can fix it.' We say, 'We'll fix it together.''

She added:

'A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons.'

Boom.

And, now that Hillary's vision for America has been laid out for the world to see, we can only hope that her presidential campaign is successful. The alternative is just too terrifying to comprehend.

Catch her full speech here. What a day for women. What a day for womankind.

What Does Your Lipstick Shape Say About Your Personality?

Lipstick’s a pretty powerful thing you know? With a slick of colour, it’s the added confidence boost you never knew you needed. It brightens up your face, but also your morning. However, there's more to it than meets the eye… If you open up your makeup bag, take out your lipsticks and line them up next to one another, chances are they’ll all look the same, because you and your lips have moulded them into identical shapes. But other than annoying your BFF when she asks to borrow your lippie, what does it actually mean?

Rounded tip

You’re an easygoing gal. Yes, you wear lipstick occasionally – you bought a lovely pillar box red about three years ago and it’s still going strong – but you’re a slave to a moisturising balm. (Your handbag is home to a pot of Vaseline and at least three Carmex.) It’s not that you don’t like lipstick; it’s just that you think that it should be saved for a special event, like a birthday party or a wedding. You glide it on once and then forget about it for the rest of the evening. Why on earth would you wear it to the office? You’d rather your work stand out, not your lips.

Diagonal slant

Your lippie looks identical to when you first bought it, that’s because you work a strong lip and use the defined lines to perfect. You don’t take risks and are a stickler for the rules; you often match your lip colour to your mani-pedi. You’re such a perfectionist in fact, that you’ve been known to correct people’s grammar in Whatsapp conversations and regularly tell your boyfriend off if he’s two minutes late for date night. Rules weren’t made for breaking; they keep the world spinning on its axis.

Flat top

You’re a busy person and time is precious. The expression ‘burns the candle at both ends’ could have been created for you. You’re the one hitting ‘attending’ on every Facebook event invitation. You press hard when applying your colour, hence the flattening, and do it quickly, on-the-go with zero f**** given. You have about three different lippies on rotation and aren’t loyal to any of them. Come to think of it, you’re like the Leonardo Dicaprio of the lipstick world!

WATCH: Would Alicia Vikander Make A Good Spy? We Found Out…

Alicia Vikander; Oscar winning actress, trained ballet dancer and super-sneaky spy?! We caught up with Alicia ahead of her role in the hugely anticipated Jason Bourne, and from what she told us, she’ll fit right in to Bourne’s wild world.

Playing CIA agent Heather Lee, Alicia is more brains than brawn in the fifth Jason Bourne flick, where Jason is back to try to uncover some hidden truths about his past. There’s twists, turns and a whole lot of drama along the way, and trust us when we say that Alicia more than holds her own against Matt Damon, Julia Stiles and Vincent Cassel.

Speaking of Matt Damon, Alicia had to stay on her toes with Matt around. The resident prankster was known for pulling jokes and pranks on the cast, and even the entire crew at the CIA hub.

As for stunts, Alicia says that her make-up artists spend the most time covering up the scars on her knees whenever she’s got a big event; ‘I’m probably one of the most clumsy people. If you look at my knees my make up team spend some time filling up all the marks. I look like a 10-year-old who’s been out playing. I really do enjoy those stunts, but I have to watch out’.

Alicia Vikander in Jason Bourne

The perfect spy uniform? ‘I love the hair clip that they let me get for my character, because it feels like one of those things that all girls have at home when you really need to get down to work and be productive, you just need to get your hair up’. Alicia, we feel you.

And the one spy skill Alicia would love to be able to do? ‘Fly. If I could make a machine to do that, that would be amazing’.

Jason Bourne is out now in UK cinemas, but if you can’t wait, check out the full trailer below

How David Bowie Influenced The Fashion World (And Still Does)

David Bowie’s legacy stretches well beyond this planet, with his otherworldly alter egos, songs about space, and astronauts singing his tunes from the International Space Station. But as well as his incredible music, it is his unique sense of innovative style that the fashion world just wouldn’t be the same without. Even though he always claimed that he wasn’t interested in fashion, rather that he wanted his music to ‘look how it sounds’, he was a huge influence on many designers. Saint Laurent’s Hedi Slimane loved him in his Diamond Dogs days (and later dressed him for his tours), and where would Phoebe Philo’s masculine tailoring at Celine or Alessandro Michele’s androgyny at Gucci be without him? Perhaps they just wouldn’t have been.

MORE: RIP David Bowie: The Fashion World Remembers An Icon

Born David Robert Jones in 1947, as a teenager in the mid-Sixties he was a mod. Unlike other parka-clad scooter enthusiasts of the time whose style got trapped in that era, he embraced the true meaning of the word mod – modernist – and moved with the times a few years later to be a long-haired hippy who went by the stage name David Bowie.

But it was in 1972 and with his second alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, that Bowie really cemented himself as a game-changing icon, one capable of singlehandedly starting cultural shifts and spawning countless copycats that you can still see evidence of on the catwalks in any given season. Ziggy was a sexually ambiguous rock star who wore make-up, shaved off his eyebrows, and had a penchant for wearing skin-tight catsuits (sometimes one-legged ones) and glam rock platform boots. He also wrote really, REALLY good songs.

MORE: 21 Times David Bowie Was The Coolest Guy In The Universe

Bowie killed off Ziggy in 1973, just a year after his incarnation, and was ready to move on to the next character. Aladdin Sane (a pun on A Lad Insane) had the same red hair as Ziggy but was even more OTT – he’s the one in that iconic image (top) with the lightning bolt make-up. By the mid-Seventies though, Bowie had toned it down and was wearing sharp suits with his bleached blond hair slicked back. This new persona was called the Thin White Duke, who Bowie once described in one of the coolest sentences ever uttered as ‘ice masquerading as fire’. And then, a decade on, no-one did for peach and powder blue tailoring what David Bowie did in the Eighties.

Left, Loewe SS16; right, Bowie in 1983

Right up until his untimely departure from this world, David Bowie continued to inspire fashion creatives everywhere. This season, you can see elements of Bowie - in all his guises - in dozens of collections, from the avant garde make-up at Gareth Pugh and Maison Margiela, to the oversized tailoring in muted tones at Loewe and Stella McCartney. In fact, a mere five hours after the news of his death broke, tributes were spotted on the catwalk at LC:M at the Sean Suen menswear show. Without David Bowie - and Ziggy Stardust, the Thin White Duke, Major Tom, Aladdin Sane - the fashion world would be a much duller place.

Looking For The ULTIMATE Chicken Wings Recipe? Well, We've Found It

Chicken wings are probably one of the greatest cullinary creations of all time. Come on, what's not to like. Ok veggies, we know you have to sit this one out (check out our delicious recipe for gluten free pizza instead), but for anyone that loves a Friday night chicken wings/beers/pals combo, we've found THE recipe to blow your minds.

Cara Ceppetelli, co-owner of famous London chicken chain BIRD has very kindly shared her secret chicken wings recipe with us, so you can create the perfect round of deliciousness at home - perfect for those long summer evenings spent chilling on a balcony with chums, getting your fingers all sticky. Yummers.

Grab a pen and paper, because this recipe is a bona fide gastro game-changer...

To start you need: 2 pounds / 1 kilo of free range chicken wings - tips removed, and jointed

Brining: The wings go into a buttermilk brine (2-3 cups will do) for 24 hours, submerged in a container (or bowl with cling film) and refrigerated.  We use plain buttermilk but adding a few big dashes of hot sauce or a few pinches of cayenne to the buttermilk works well. For gluten free wings you can use a mixture of rice flour (2 cups) and cornstarch (1 cup).  Alternatively just plain white flour.

Seasoned with: 1 tbsp each of garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, sea salt and black pepper. You can up the seasoning and spice levels, and feel free to add other spices to your liking too!

Coating: Remove wings from the buttermilk brine and toss in the seasoned flour mix, coating generously, making sure to really clump on the flour so there are no moist bits left.

Fry: In fresh rapeseed or peanut oil at 150 degrees for 8-9 minutes until golden brown. Drain on a rack, season lightly with salt, and they're ready to be served either tossed in a glaze or with a dipping sauce on the side. Our favourite is the simplest traditional buffalo wing glaze which is 1/2 Frank's hot sauce, 1/2 butter, warmed and combined together.

Why not serve the wings alongside Elly Pear's sunshine summer salad. So simple. So delicious.

Right, who's bring the beers?

16 Moments From Adele's Tour That'll Totally Make You Smile

Instagram/@adele

Adele is some woman.

Between penning number one albums, belting out tunes and basically being THE most ridiculously talented person ever, Adele has also given her fans some pretty special moments during her current sold-out tour. From cuppas to marriage proposals, here are the 9 moments from Adele's tour guaranteed to give you all the feels.

May there be many, many more...

1. Adele meets her impersonator

Adele wasted no time in getting her professional drag impersonator up on stage during the Seattle show. Along with a typical Adele-ism ('Oh my god!), the singer pulled up Kristie Champagne to join her and hug it out. Feels.

2. The Prince Tribute

When Adele kicked off the US leg of her 25 tour in Prince’s home state of Minnesota, she delivered the ultimate tribute. “I did maybe consider covering a song,” Adele reportedly told the crowd, “but f**k it, it’s Prince.” Damn straight, Adele. So, instead, she handed the mic over to the late purple one, opting to play his 1994 music video for 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World' on a giant screen. What a legend.

3. The Freak Out

Bless her. Adele got a bit of a shock when she plucked two young girls from the audience in Amsterdam and brought them on stage. ‘I knew her when she was a baby!’ she freaked out before throwing in quite a few ‘oh my gods’ for good measure. Turns out one of them was the daughter of her cello player. Small world, eh?

4. The Fan Shut Down

Word to the wise, guys: leave the tripod at home. Turns out Adele, is not a fan of us filming her on stage and - surprise surprise - she isn't shy telling us why! What's more, we love her for it. 'Can you take your tripod down?' she said from the stage. 'This isn't a DVD, this is a real show.' She continued: “I'd really like you to enjoy my show because there's lots of people outside that couldn't come in." Too right, Adele.

5. The look-alike selfie

So, turns out that if you look a bit like Adele, chances are you'll be pulled up on stage with her for an honorary selfie. That's exactly what happened to fan Emily Bamforth in Birmingham's Genting arena on Tuesday. After fellow concert goers pointed out Emily's resemblance to the Hello singer, fiancé Tom Winkler took to social media to try and grab Adele's attention. Which of course, he did. Cue greatest moment ever.

6. The twerking

Adele it seems is as useless at twerking as the rest of us. Thank god. Our futile attempts at twerking in the past have made us look a bit like dancing toddlers, so it's refreshing to learn that Adele feels our pain. After attempting the dreaded (and somewhat sexy) dance at a London performance over the weekend, the star (through fits of laughter) exclaimed:

'I think I just twerked!'

'I can’t do it that well. My whole body has to move. My bum could break my back it’s so enormous.'

*sigh* we love you Adele...

7. The photobomb in Manchester

Adele kicked off her Manchester dates in style when she took it upon herself to get into a fan's selfie. Mum Kerry Scott couldn't believe her luck when she called out to the Hello singer for a sneaky snap between songs, and Adele (like a boss) was only too happy to oblige.

8. The alcopop

One fan (also in Manchester) randomly offered Adele a bottle of Smirnoff Ice, which the Tottenham lass graciously accepted. She did admit however that she wouldn't be indulging in the alco-treat:

'I can't drink!' she exclaimed. 'I'm not allowed to drink for a whole year because I've got to do a f******g-hundred shows!'

Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, Adele promised that the alcopop would passed on to her manager. What a champ.

9. She made a little girl's dreams come true

After spotting 12-year-old Emily Tammam and her pink 'It is my dream to sing with Adele' banner in the crowd, the songstress did the only thing we'd expect Adele to do, she pulled Emily up on stage to sing with her. Emily, who has autism and ADHD, managed to keep up with her idol by hitting all the high notes. If this vid doesn't get the tears going, nothing will.

10. She made ANOTHER little girl's dreams come true

Eleven-year-old Kate Judson had no idea when she travelled down from York to see Adele perform in Manchester that she'd actually get to meet her hero, but after spotting little Kate dancing along to her set, Adele waved and said:

'Hello darling, I see you little one.'

Kate is then pulled up onto the stage for an Adele squidge and a chat about music. Too much.

11. The marriage proposal

Spotting what she initially thought was a fight, Adele soon realised during her performance of Make You Feel My Love that the commotion was being caused by an impromptu marriage proposal. After pulling Natalie King and Johnny Biggle up onto the O2 stage to join her, Adele then gives the entire crowd ALL the emotion by exclaiming:

'That was the most beautiful thing I've ever witnessed at one of my shows. Thank you.'

12. The Irish duo

Irish lads Ronan Scolard and Glenn Murphy had no idea that a) the video medley of them performing Adele songs would go viral, and b) that Adele would actually watch said video and invite the pair up on stage to sing with her at Dublin's 3Arena. After an emotional performance, the pair received a standing ovation.

Stirring stuff.

13. The cuppa

Adele launched her world tour in Belfast with...a cup of Rosie Lee.

A girl after our own hearts.

LOVE her.

14. When the sound system cut-out and the crowd carried on for her

Adele never has much luck singing 'All I Ask' — she had that piano issue back at the Grammys and then during the Birmingham leg of her tour, the sound cut out half way through leaving the crowd to sing it! It's actually pretty amazing...

15. When she forgot the song lyrics

In Lisbon Adele totally forgot the lyrics to track 'Million Years Ago'. Her reaction? A throaty laugh plus a slew of expletives. Obvs.

16. Uh, Spice Girls cover?

Adele decided to give fans a little Spice Girls tribute during her Netherlands concert and well, we just can't deal. Apparently the actual Spice Girls were delighted. Natch.

EXCLUSIVE: Stacy Martin On R-Patz, Sex Scenes And Telling The Press 'F**K You'

Stacy Martin for InStyle UK

For our September issue, the InStyle team headed to Dalston to capture the gorgeous Stacy Martin in autumn/ winter 2016's hottest looks. Making her on-screen debut in Nymphomaniac this 25 year old half French, half British actress is one of the brightest new stars of indie cinema. Living in East London with her musician and alt-rock poster boy fiance Daniel Blumberg, you'll often find her whizzing around town on her Honda C90 motorbike. If you don't recognise her from her Miu Miu campaign (she's the face of the brand's first fragrance) you'll definitely recognise her by the end of 2016 what with four major films coming out over the next couple of months. Here's a sneak peek of what she had to say post InStyle shoot but for more check out the September issue that hits shelves on the 4th of August...

On facing the world’s press and putting herself in the critics’ firing line for her role in Nymphomaniac...

‘It was difficult,’ she admits. ‘I didn’t even know what a press junket was. I’d never experienced it.’ The massed ranks of inquisitors were never likely to hold back. ‘They just thought it was some weird, porn thing. Journalists would ask me very indecent questions, like, how old I was when I lost my virginity. One, that’s really irrelevant; two, fuck you!’

On whether she was shocked at how portraying sex on screen can still incite such fierce debate...

‘A lot of the time I find sex on screen quite pointless,’ is her response. ‘But it’s weird that you can film people killing children, stories about paedophiles, about genocide or domestic violence, and people watch it and are completely fine. There’s a craving for violence that makes it acceptable. With sex, people are more reserved.’

On her Nymphomaniac co-star, Shia LaBeouf, with whom she shared many an intimate scene...

‘I do feel there is a big stigma attached to actors who try and break out, but Shia’s been really clever about it. I don’t think a lot of his earlier fan base has understood the switch that he’s made from Transformers to being an artist.’

On meeting Robert Pattinson who she stars alongside in The Childhood Of A Leader...

‘The first time I saw him was in Paris at the Eurostar lounge and I thought, “That looks like Rob”. This was about three months after the film and we’d never met before. I said, “Hi. You’re in Brady’s film, I’m in Brady’s film.” (Brady Corbet, the movie’s 27-year-old American director most noted for playing the son of Jack Bauer’s girlfriend in 24.) Everyone thinks we have this love affair. We don’t. So we joked about it and that was it.’

When Is It Ok To Add Your New Squeeze On FB? Social Media Dating Etiquette, Explained

So, picture this...

You’re dating someone new. You’re totally into one another. I mean, you’re both almost at the PDA stage. He’s even introduced you to his mates.

So, when is it acceptable to add them as a friend on Facebook? To follow them on Instagram? And why does this small thing freak the absolute bejesus out of us? Is it fear of rejection? Or, if his account is private (admit it, you’ve totally checked out his pics already), does it mean that he’s hiding a wife/pet tarantula/sock fetish somewhere?

Whatever. The fact is, in a society that’s made social media it’s main focus, especially in the dating world, it's essential that we know the etiquette surrounding it. Because, you can seriously balls things up if you get it wrong. Start adding him willy-nilly across social media platforms could (read: will definitely) make you look like a bit of a stalker-lunatic person, but keeping your distance may also give off the impression that you are the one with a closet full of skeletons.

So how do we relationship fledglings negotiate such blurred boundaries? I for one, would love a bit of guidance here.

Luckily, dating expert James Preece (AKA The Dating Guru) was on hand to offer up some excellent advice on this social media pickle.

So, let's go for the jugular – how long before you can add someone that you’re dating as a ‘friend’ on Facebook?

‘Anything less than three dates is going to come across as too keen. When you are first getting to know someone, the thrill comes from finding things out about each other slowly. If you can find everything out on Facebook immediately then it takes away the fun and the mystery.  You have to leave some things to the imagination to build suspense!’

If their account is on ‘private’, how do you approach any awkwardness about them NOT accepting your friend request – is that a rejection?

‘If someone has set their account to private, that's because that's what they’re comfortable with. They might not want everyone to know every little thing about them. If they wanted to add you then they would so it may take time.  If you have been dating, then it's not a rejection - more of a "let's wait and see." Of course, if things get serious between you and they've still not accepted... you have to wonder what (or who) they might be hiding.’

(i.e. sock fetish)

Is it EVER appropriate to mention that you’ve already looked through their social media profile (pictures, etc..)

‘This isn't a great thing to mention on a first date as it's going to come across a bit creepy. Not just that, but they'll wonder exactly what you might have seen. If they have a public website then it's fine to admit to having a look at that, though.’

Do guys social media stalk as much as women do?

‘Yes, absolutely! Guys are more visual than women so they'll have the urge to look at photos. You'll probably find they will try to add you on social media before you even get the chance to think about it.’

Is it ever cool to try and approach someone via LinkdIn? Bit weird, no? (FYI, this has happened to me before)

‘The problem with LinkedIn is that you have absolutely no idea if someone is single or in a relationship. Having said that, more and more people are adding professional photos in the hope of getting attention. It's just not a great idea to contact people and ask them out as you risk getting your account suspended. If you are single and you find someone you like on LinkedIn, it's a better tactic to see if you can reach out to them on another social site instead.’

Is it best to leave out social media altogether in the beginning stages of a relationship?

‘Everyone does a little social media research now and again, purely because information is so readily available. You can see exactly what they are up to, where they are, and who they are doing it with.  It is better for your own sanity though to try and stay clear when it's still such early days. Otherwise, you might find yourself getting jealous or frustrated without any good reason.’

So there you have it ladies. Chill out, easy on the stalking and use the three date rule. Simples.

13 Reasons You Absolutely Have To Watch Stranger Things RIGHT NOW

Will and Eleven in the Netflix series Stranger Things

Will and Eleven in the Netflix series Stranger Things

Netflix

It took me less than a week to get through the totally brilliant, nostalgically spooky, insanely addictive series Stranger Things on Netflix, but with only eight episodes, you could easily do it in a weekend. A day, even. Guys, I’m not advocating calling in sick, but, just saying…

Anyway, I LOVED it. It feels like something you should have watched years ago, or something you maybe DID watch in the ‘80s, such is its familiarity. The cast of mostly unknowns with a few familiar faces is PERFECT. And the sort of sci-fi story isn’t geeky enough to be off-putting, or scary enough to make you actually hide behind the curtains, but it will definitely have you on the edge of your seat and maybe even turning the hall light on when you go to the loo.

Here’s why I think you should watch it too. Like, now. (no spoilers, I promise)

1. Millie Bobby Brown

12-year-old Millie totally stole the show for me. I mean, the rest of the cast is brilliant, but this girl is extraordinary. She plays Eleven, a slightly “different’ girl, shall we say (you’ll find out why when you watch it). Other than acting her socks off to the point where an Oscar must be on the cards in a few years, she also had the balls to let them shave her head for the role. Oh, and she attended the season premier in a ball gown and Converse. LOVE her.

via GIPHY

2. The ‘80s

The show is set in 1983, and if it reminds you of many of your favourite films from thirty-odd years ago  – E.T., The Goonies, Stand By Me, Poltergeist – that’s because when the Duffer Brothers (the show’s creators) had the idea to make Stranger Things, they tested it out by cutting together clips from more than 25 movies from that era. They also made all the kids in the show watch them. And it’s so sensitively done that it never feels like a rip-off; always an affectionate tribute.

via GIPHY

3. Steven Spielberg Vibes

By far and away the biggest influence on the Duffer Brothers appears to be Steven Spielberg. The foggy, low lighting is all Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the kids go everywhere on their bikes, Goonies-style, and there’s even a point when Mike hides Eleven from his mom by sticking her in a cupboard, and then dressing her up in a pale pink dress and a blonde wig. E.T., anyone?

via GIPHY

4. The Artwork

Oh, and the poster looks just like the original Star Wars posters. Good enough to frame and pop on your wall.

5. The Kids

I’ve always admired Steven Spielberg for casting amazing child actors, and Stranger Things is no different. In addition to Millie Bobby Brown, there’s Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas) and Noah Schnapp (Will). Check out those on-brand ‘80s character names, too.

via GIPHY

6. Winona Ryder

It makes perfect sense in this nostalgia-fest to cast someone like Winona to play Joyce, the mother of mysteriously missing child Will. She requested that her character’s hair looked like Meryl Streep’s in the film Silkwood. And it totally did.

7. The One That Looks A Bit Like Christian Slater

British actor Charlie Heaton plays missing boy Will’s older brother Jonathan, a slightly troubled outsider at high school, and a role that Christian Slater would DEF have been up for if this had actually been made in the ‘80s. Not that we’d swap Charlie for Christian. He does a great job of being broody.

via GIPHY

8. The Classic High School Angst Scenes

The outcast. The joker. The jock. The nerdy but beautiful girl who goes out with the jock. You just don’t get these kinds of characters anymore. I miss them. Which brings me to…

via GIPHY

9. Barb

You’ll find out about Barb. Pretty in Pink's Andie meets The Goonies' Stef. Total ‘80s stereotype legend. Poor Barb.

via GIPHY

10. Steve’s Nike Trainers

Nothing says ‘80s teenager like a pair of white Nikes with a red swoosh. I’m pretty certain Steve’s were Cortez, as seen on Forrest Gump, but Marty McFly in Back To The Future wears a similar style, the Nike All Court Low.

via GIPHY

11. All The Other Amazing Retro Trainers

Sneaker heads will spend a lot of time looking at characters’ feet. I was particularly taken with Mike’s Pumas.

via GIPHY

12. The Typeface

The opening credits are in a typeface inspired by the work of Richard Greenberg, the guy responsible for the opening credits in Superman and Alien.

via GIPHY

13. The Music

The theme tune is that kind of music, like The X-Files, that you are likely to develop a little dance to. Or is that just me and Mr Rochell?! It’s instantly iconic, like Twin Peaks. In fact, the music all the way through the show is so good that it’s just been announced that the soundtrack will be released. Can’t wait.

Now I just have to sit about and wait for season 2...

Julia Roberts Pays Tribute to Garry Marshall: 'His Love Was Unconditional'

Following Garry Marshall's death, Julia Roberts is opening up about her love for the late director and the influence he had on her life.

'To know Garry Marshall was to love him,' the Oscar winner told People.

'And I was luckier than most to have loved him for my entire adult life and luckier still to have been loved by him because his love was unconditional, inexhaustible and magical.'

The filmmaker, who passed away July 19 at the age of 81 of complications from pneumonia following a stroke, helped launch Roberts's career when he cast her in 1990s Pretty Woman.

'The map of Garry's career is long and illustrious. Innovative and simply amazing,' she continued. 'I was 7 years old when Happy Days came on TV. Followed a couple of years later by Laverne & Shirley and then Mork & Mindy. I have said before that Garry Marshall raised me, and it is rather true.'

'For 10 years he made all who watched television laugh and learn and strive to be better, more open people. He taught us to be nice, that life could be simple and sweet and, most importantly, that friends and family were everything.'

'It is my great fortune that there were only a few short years between Happy Days going off the air and Garry Marshall walking into my life and changing it in so many ways," she added. "His family was everything to him, and it showed in every piece of work he ever did.'

Prior to his death, Roberts gushed about the filmmaker to InStyle, saying, 'He was really a great shepherd for me in the beginning. You can never give credit for anything to one person. Singular credit just doesn't exist. But if I were to single someone out as a person whom I feel very indebted to, in what I realized the other day is my 30-year career, it would be Garry.'

'He knows how to touch all those places in our hearts that we just sit around longing for people to tap into,' she continued. 'He's a master of that.'

Simone Mariposa

Simone wears what she wants

Keep your stomach hidden. You shouldn’t wear loud prints. Horizontal stripes are nobody’s friend, and leave the crop tops to girls with flat stomachs. The ‘rules’ for what plus-size and curvy women should and shouldn’t wear are endless, but when it comes down to it, they’re all complete and utter rubbish (to put it politely).

After seeing yet another story of a woman shamed for her size and outfit on social media, body positive model Simone Mariposa is taking a stand with #WeWearWhatWeWant, a Twitter hashtag that aims to show off plus-size women in socially ‘unacceptable’ outfits (in Simone’s own words). Check her mission statement below.

The hashtag has gone viral across social media, with thousands of women (and men!) sharing pictures of themselves in outfits that make them feel great. We’re talking short skirts, bikinis, bodycon dresses, cut-out tops and even plain old underwear, because a plus-size woman has every right to wear whatever she wants – WITHOUT being shamed.

The 23-year-old from California has suffered from body image issues in the past, telling Buzzfeed that she kept her arms and legs covered up, and stayed away from clothes that accentuated her belly fat. Now? Simone has ‘stopped letting society dictate my wardrobe, and started wearing things that I always dreamed of wearing’. Through #WeWearWhatWeWant, Simone hopes to ‘lead by example’ and get plus-size women loving their bodies again (if they don't already).

Whether or not you associate with the term plus-size, these curvy girls are serving serious style inspiration on our timelines right now – thank you, Simone Mariposa! So the next time you change your outfit for something safer, take a deep breath and remember – you can wear WHATEVER you want.

Kendall Jenner's Braless Look Is Ultimate Sass, But Can We Rock It IRL?

Kendall Jenner's braless look has become something of a talking point here at InStyle HQ.

Point in question started with the picture above, in which Kendall Jenner can be seen rocking a sheer black bodysuit whilst out and about in NYC with pals Gigi Hadid and Hailey Baldwin.

The pic hit the Interweb, and suddenly Kendall Jenner’s nipples (and more specifically, Kendall Jenner’s nipple piercing) became a worldwide discussion… one that Kendall has responded to via her website, and officially named ‘Free The Nipple’.

‘I really don’t see what the big deal is with going braless,’ Kendall wrote.

‘I think it’s cool and I really just don’t care! It’s sexy, it’s comfortable and I’m cool with my breasts. That’s it!’

She then adds:

‘It’s also a fun way to show off my different nipple rings.’

Right on, sister.

I mean, we’re all women here. What’s the big deal? Kendall Jenner has fabulous boobs, why on earth wouldn’t she feel comfortable about not wearing a bra?

Which brings me onto the point in question, and why KenJen’s nipples have become the subject of many a team InStyle fashion chinwag of late: is this ‘Free The Nipple’ look going to become a ‘thing’? Also, can anyone who ISN’T Kendall Jenner nail braless chic in real life?

Kendall’s stacked modelling stats and signature off-duty street style makes her total fash trailblazer, so it’s quite possible that in three months times us normal types could be walking around sheer, and bra-free. Really though?! It's quite a sass statment to make.

Our hashtag fabulous Shopping Editor Josh Newis-Smith sheds some light on Nip 101:

‘The Kardashians are no strangers to nudity, so it’s no great surprise to see Kendall showing off what Kris gave her. I mean with a body like that why wouldn’t you? Her carefree attitude should 100% be applauded.’

‘As much as I would love to say this is a trend for all, it’s really not. It’s a no go for big boobs unless they have been surgically stuck in a northern position. Small boobs however- rejoice.’

Styling tips?

‘If you want to attempt the no bra/sheer top/nipple piercing combo and want to keep it remotely classy, then team with a blazer - sometimes a bit of reveal and conceal is more effective than the full frontal effect. Keep the punters guessing gals!’

Would you attempt Kendall’s braless look? Discuss...

Alison Goldfrapp On The Pre-Show Rituals That Keep Her Calm

Alison Goldfrapp knows what it's like to feel nervous. As one half of electronic music duo Goldfrapp (her long-time collaborator is Will Gregory), she has performed in front of thousands upon thousands of people, and this summer she's taken on a new project: photographing headline acts in the build-up to their Summer Series performances at Somerset House.

Goldfrapp swapped mic for camera in the aim to capture the pre-show journey: you know, from pre-gig nerves to post-performance elation. The chosen artists for, Anticipation, are singer-songwriters Laura Mvula and Jack Savoretti. 'I performed there [Somerset House] myself in 2013 so it was great going back. I can vividly recall the moments that made that performance so memorable for me and I tried to capture some of these emotions in the pictures I took of Laura and Jack.'

We caught up with Alison, looked at her beautiful photographs and asked her to talk us through her pre-show rituals. After all, if anyone knows how to keep calm under pressure, it's her.

We can't even imagine how nerve-wracking performing to thousands of people must be, how do you prepare?

'When I’m on tour, I get into a routine with it all so I’m much more relaxed and it’s easier to do a show. It’s much harder at the start of a tour or if it’s a one-off gig. If I’m particularly nervous I like to have a moment on my own to relax, be calm and focus my thoughts before going on stage.'

Do you have a pre-show routine to get you in the zone?
'I’ll have a light meal a couple of hours before a show. Then I’ll go into my dressing room and get into make-up and get dressed. I like this time as it’s a way of relaxing and being calm. Then before I go on stage I warm up my voice, then go and hang out with the band. It’s really important for me to feel connected to all the band members and for us to feel like a united front. They are really special to me.'

Jack Savoretti by Alison Goldfrapp

Are you one of those stars who demands fluffy white kittens and Gold-infused water on their rider?
'I don’t have any crazy rider requests actually... just the usual bottles of water that have to be at room temperature, as cold drinks aren’t great for the voice. I do like to indulge in some treats after the show though, a good slab of chocolate usually works well!

Any essential dressing room vibes?
'Ideally the dressing room should be calm, fun and easy. I love having essential oils in an oil burner. Good smells in the dressing room are really comforting I find.'

And what about your pre-show beauty routine?
'I like low maintenance, so there's nothing special that I do. Having a facial every now and then is great though to keep the skin looking good and release all the tension around the head and jaw.'

You’re so well known for your show outfits – do you find they're a sort of armour for you?
'Dressing up for a show is fun and it definitely gives me a sense of occasion and gets me into a particular zone before I go on stage. It’s really important for me to feel comfortable though, too. The last thing you want is an item of clothing or shoes to make you feel self-conscious as that might distract you from your performance.'

Can you give us any advice for dealing with pressure and nerves?

'It’s very hard to stop nerves, once they set in it’s difficult to alter the mind-set. I think a little bit of nervousness can be a really good thing, you just don’t want them to overpower you. Just try to remember your audience is on your side, be yourself and enjoy the moment!'

Jack Savoretti by Alison Goldfrapp

You've recently taken up photography, did you find this career shift scary?
'Photography has always been a big part of my life. I remember playing around with a camera as a kid at the bottom of the garden. I would take pictures of anything, literally anything that caught my eye.

'Photography is something I genuinely love doing. Whilst I’m a musician first and foremost, imagery always been very important to me and has influenced how I write and think about music. Making photographs is a real passion of mine and something I’d like to explore further, so I was very flattered and honoured when American Express commissioned my first commercial collection of images.'

Alison Goldfrapp teamed up with American Express® to get fans closer to the action by photographing headliners Laura Mvula and Jack Savoretti as they prepared for their recent gigs at Summer Series at Somerset House.
