Charlotte Ritchie (right) taking the 21st century to 1950s South Africa whilst filming

Call The Midwife is THE perfect Christmas day show: it’s got all the emotion and all of the fuzzy feelings. This time around the nurses skip off to South Africa, so don’t be expecting any snow. We caught up with show’s star, Charlotte Ritchie (Call The Midwife’s Barbara and formally known as Fresh Meat’s Oregon) who shared her backstage photo diary from filming with us. Prepare for some fabulous 50s costumes, fake sun burn and pure escapism.

"It was absolutely boiling filming in the midday heat up at 'Bontebok Ridge'. I have so much respect for all the supporting actors who were so patient and hard working while we sweated away in the sun. The girl in the photo was so lovely. It was unusual to talk to someone the same age as me with an entirely different life- she lived in a township in Cape Town. We were both laughing at Steven  who is often causing havoc on set or singing and dancing, which always helps the day go faster..."

"I was constantly made up with sunburn (red and brown make up), sweat (Egyptian magic face mouisturiser) greasy hair and dirt. I'd come to work looking respectable and by the time we got on set I'd be completely discheveled to the point that I got double-takes from members of the crew. Barbara doesn't travel well, it seems, and had never been abroad so wasn't quite ready for the sun and the heat."

"What was lovely about this episode was how much time Barbara and Trixie spend together. After the last series was so rocky for them, the trip to South Africa was a really lovely time for them to help each other. And actually, I absolutely loved being able to spend so much time with Helen. We had a whole month in Cape Town, all staying in the same hotel. Everybody in the cast and the crew relished the chance to go for drinks together in the evening and really spend proper time together. At least, I hope they did...."

"It is such an honour to work with so many Iconic actresses (including Judy Parfitt, Jenny Agutter, Linda Bassett and Pam Ferris). I've learned so much from everyone in the cast and they are all so generous and supportive. It's such an unusual show to be about women's issues with an almost entirely female ensemble cast, and it is such a pleasure to work with so many talented actors and actresses, many of whom I've admired for a long time."

"I love this photo so much because Linda (Basset) kept making us Howl with laughter every time she said 'African skies'. Nurse crane is so wonderful and so funny. This was just after we'd met a tarantula and also almost got run over by some nearby cows. There were so many animals around."

"That's me and Terry, the real life midwife. She's always on hand to help with the babies and advice on what to do- here she's helping me take the temperature of the baby by putting a thermometer under the armpit. The babies are such divas. They come from a local agency. Always sleeping. Crying. Eating. To be fair, they are the stars of the show and are very sweet and lovely and make the set all quiet and nice."

The 2017 Trends You NEED To Find In The Sales

Snap up sheer in the January sales a-la Dior

Sales can throw one into a massive panic. You will be asking yourself, “do I really need these black PVC trousers which are one size two small? I may slim into them once I join the gym in January when all my fitness dreams are realised- so YES because they have 10 percent off and I NEED THEM.’ The answer actually is, no you don’t need them. Here are the 5 trends you need to tap up in the sales to future proof your wardrobe for 2017. NOTE: There are NO references to florals below- now that is groundbreaking.

SASSIFY SHEER

The racier the better, the more playful the better. Dior’s Spring/Summer 2017 will be what Gucci was to 2015-2016. So shop till you drop for sheer dresses, skirts, bralets, basically ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING SEE THROUGH. It’s a slapper’s paradise and best of all its all in the name of fashion.

LIMBER UP FOR LAME

Believe it or not the Turkey isn’t the only one who needs wrapping up in foil. Lame is great for the party season but come spring/summer 2017 you are going to sashay into the club/office/corner shop, 1980s style. From the ultimate pink disco at Gucci to the futuristic Isabel Marant the soiree staple will be shimmying well into next summer.

(FROM LEFT: Gucci and Isabel Marant)

OPT FOR OP ART

Monochrome is a perennial favourite but come 2017 it’s opting for an optical approach. Those with visual sensitivity should avoid otherwise look out for bold stripes, snazzy swirls and the old polka dot. Top points for those who can locate a playful pleated number or any drastic draping a-la Louis Vuitton.

THINK PINK

I couldn’t resist using that very basic fashion journalist line- because let’s face it it’s almost the Christmas break and it does what it says on the tin. From acid to girly, pink takes on many tones for next year. However steer away from ‘frothy’ interpretations and instead give pink some serious power by looking out for strong silhouettes and avoiding anything twee.

MEDAL WITH METAL

All that glitters will still be golden come next year. Just ensure your heavy metal pieces are given a relaxed restyling with sliders or if you really want to get fresh (Prince) with ’17, team with a baseball cap- Karl Lagerfeld always has the best ideas.

REWORK WINTER WHITES

Box fresh whites will be freshened up with a sporty spirit. However if dressing like a martial arts instructor isn’t your thing (SEE DIOR FOR REFERENCE) then use a more utilitarian approach by making sure your purchases pack some serious pockets.

All that is left to say is stay safe our there, sales shopping is basically the first world’s version of warfare. Wardrobe Warfare, if you will.

This Is The Best Advice We Ever Heard…

best life advice quotes

For the November issue of InStyle we asked eight super-successful women to share the best life advice they ever heard. Here, editor Charlotte Moore explains why…

'Don’t google yourself'; 'Never, EVER cry at work'; 'If you’re not feeling it, don’t do it.' So say Clara Amfo, Carole White and Alexandra Roach, just three of the brilliant women we’ve interviewed for this year’s Best Advice We’ve Ever Heard section in our November issue.

It got me wondering about the best advice anyone’s ever given me. Although my dad wasn’t a big one for doling out words of wisdom, “Be breezy” was definitely something I learnt from him. No matter how much I have wanted to scream, shout, cry, yell, text FFS when things go wrong or don’t quite go my way, I do my absolute utmost not to succumb to the rage – at least not outside my own green front door. If I do, then they win.

Holding it together and breezing my way through the most impossible, embarrassing, painful moments (well, maybe not childbirth) is always my aim, if not the reality. When my dad died last summer it was probably the most tragic and horrific experience of my whole life. We were in Tuscany and had just shared some Prosecco in a tiny bar at the bottom of not a very steep hill. He was an economics academic and despite semi-retirement was still teaching post-graduates at his college in Cambridge, often in London hanging out at the Groucho chatting to whoever was at the bar – he was very much part of the here and now.

At the moment when it happened I was suggesting that he should read Lena Dunham’s book that I’d just finished on the sunlounger. Within seconds, after a fatal heart attack, he was gone. The only way of coping for my three young daughters, my mum and my sisters in those hours, days and weeks just after it happened was to keep it together.

It was horrendous, we were utterly bereft, devastated and in shock. But he wouldn’t have lost it, so I wasn’t going to either. Breeziness kept me going when I had to travel to the shows just two weeks afterwards for business as usual – I did my best and kept on smiling. I know lots  of my friends were worried that not taking the time to cry and grieve would come back to get me. But it didn’t, at least not so far.

Advice is thrown at you every second of the day – from quotes on Instagram, to endless self-help books, to mates waxing on about what you should do about that guy who randomly messages you. But it’s only when you act on it and it really, really works that it stays with you forever. What’s the best advice you’ve ever heard? I’d love to know.

More from our November issue:  Alesha Dixon like you've never seen her before...

Emily Berrington, actress
Don’t smile away your power

‘I was at drama school when the renowned Shakespeare teacher Patsy Rodenburg said to me once, “Don’t smile away your power”. There’s something very powerful in somebody with a straight face demanding to be taken seriously. I think it’s probably quite common for young women to smile and be amenable and say yes to everything, but it’s okay to stick your neck out. Another piece of advice I remember was from Dominic West. He told us to “hold on tightly, let go lightly”, meaning go into the rehearsal room and stick up for what you think your character should be doing, but if it’s not going to work, let it go. I apply it to my life, too – a job you don’t get or a relationship, or an argument. It’s so satisfying when good advice rhymes.’

best life advice quotes

Alexandra Roach, actress
If you’re not feeling it, don’t do it

‘My mother brought me up on the advice, “Don’t do anything you don’t want to”. It’s shaped my whole life. When I played Maggie Thatcher, I understood where she was coming from. We’re both from working-class families and she wanted to get out and better herself. She had such drive and ambition, which I did too. I’d just come out of drama school and everyone was telling me to lose my Welsh accent, but I thought, “No, I’m not turning into one of these actor robots.” That strong-mindedness my mother gave me is what I took into that audition.

In my late twenties, I’ve noticed other pressures like “I have to get a house!” and it’s easy to let your instinct get buried. Don’t succumb. I’m getting married next year and I’m keeping it individual. I’ve stuck to my guns so far – like everything else in my life.’

Mary Charteris, model & DJ
Peacock yourself

‘I never want to be in the background – I get my kicks by making life exciting. I’m in a band with my husband Robbie and when we met, he told me, “Always peacock yourself”. It’s not showing off, it’s about pushing your own boundaries. When I got married, I thought it would be funny to have a dress that flashed some flesh. Pam Hogg designed it because she gets my wild side. I wanted it to be memorable and she nailed it. I don’t mind being naked either. Women’s bodies are so beautiful – you shouldn’t shy away from it. There are loads of people out there who bash me when I post a picture from a shoot where I’m half naked, but I just put my blinkers on.’

best life advice quotes

Maxine Peake, actress
What you don’t do counts

‘I didn’t have the best of times training to be an actor. I was at Salford City College, which was all-singing, all-dancing, and I didn’t sing or dance. Within a couple of weeks, they said I was too shy, but I hung in there. When I got to RADA, the actor Michael Culkin came to do a reading of a play. He said, “You’ll probably always play nurses”. I thought, how rude! Years later, I reminded him of what he said. He apologised and said, “Your career is made not of what you do – it’s what you don’t do”. With my Northern working-class background, I realised I’d have to be picky or I’d get typecast. When I was on Dinnerladies, Victoria Wood said to me, “You’re big, you’re blonde, you’re Northern – you’re going to get typecast”. It takes someone like Victoria or Michael to consolidate what you thought. We do a scheme at RADA where we buddy up with students. If they tell me they’ve been offered a role they’re not sure about, I say, “Can you pay your rent? Well, don’t do it. Sit tight”. I’m all for sitting tight.’

best life advice quotes

Pixiwoo, vloggers
Step away from the argument

Nic: ‘The best advice my mum has ever given us is to always step away from an argument, think about it and then speak to each other. Even if my sister and I have a massive row and hate each other in that moment, the next second we’ll be best friends again. You can’t do that with anyone else. Having the odd little tiff is not a bad thing – it shows you are passionate.’

Sam: ‘The best thing about being in business with Nic is that we can have complete conversations with just one look. At work, you can be at loggerheads with a colleague about something, but with my sister, we’re able to lay everything on the table, rather than pussyfooting around. Nothing festers. The best advice we give to each other is trust your gut. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it, as you will only have yourself to blame.’

Clara Amfo, radio presenter
Never google yourself

‘Searching for yourself online is emotional self-harm. Doing a job like mine makes me an easy target – to a lot of people I’m just a voice on the radio, not a human. I’m always honoured when anyone says they admire what I do, but I never want to be a role model. That can be a dangerous honour. I’m just trying to live my life, not live it for other people.’

best life advice quotes

Carole White, founder of Premier Model Management
Always plan for what if – and never cry at work

‘Don’t celebrate until the ink has dried on a contract – I learnt that from my father. Always think, “What if?”. I once had a million-pound contract about to be signed with a famous model and boxer. We’d had champagne to celebrate and then the next day the boxer did something really, really bad. And it was all off. You’ve got to be careful not to show weakness in business – so I would never cry at work. I don’t cry much at all. It just makes it harder to be taken seriously. As a boss, you’re leading an army. You can’t go off to charge at the enemy and start crying – your troops will desert you.’

Caroline Flack, TV presenter
Knowledge is power – and be kind to people

‘As each year goes past, I get a bit more “screw everything!”. I used to be such a worrier, then in my thirties, I thought, “What on earth have I spent the last ten years worrying about?” My dad always told me, “knowledge is power”. I applied that at school – I had to work hard because I wasn’t naturally gifted. My sister got higher grades at dance school, and my mum would say, “Don’t be scared if she does better than you” – that was an incentive. My mum was like the Judy Murray of ballet. So it meant when I did Strictly I was practising like a lunatic – started earliest and finished latest. Even my dancing partner said, “I think you know the routine by now”. I was like, No! Let’s do it more. My sister bought me a print that says, “Work hard, play hard, be kind” and I try and live my life like that. I truly believe in being kind – how nice does it feel when someone says something nice to you? There’s nothing better. If people feel bad about themselves, they think it will make them feel better to be mean about someone else. But I tend to kill people with kindness. It works – they tend to say sorry and be nice back. One of my favourite words is “content” – it’s such a lovely idea to be content.’

EXCLUSIVE: Why Stella Maxwell Is ALL About Nips On Insta Plus Crushing On Bella

Stella Maxwell is the face of Replay's Touch campaign

Fresh off her stint on the Victoria’s Secret runway, Stella Maxwell talks to Joshington Hosts exclusively on the set of the Replay Touch campaign (where shes teaming up with Irina Shayk) about how she deals with the intense media scrutiny surrounding her, nudity on Instragram, admiring Bella Hadid and how ping pong can help get you THAT body…

JH: How do you deal with the intense media scrutiny on your life?

SM: I think it’s better not to read into anything too much because you know in reality people don’t really know what’s going on in your life. You just have to keep it light. If I do ever read anything I don’t get too worried about it because whatever the scenario is, it’s not you and you know it’s going to be old news in a day or two.

JH: You are not scared to get a little bit of flesh out on Instagram, how do you feel about nudity on social media? How do you feel about free nipple?

S: Yeah I find it really tricky because I always try to be tasteful but I know some of my pictures have been taken down but you can’t see my nipple because they are blurred or covered by shadows so I don’t get the problem. That just isn’t a vulgar photo in any way and then I see other Instagram accounts where it’s just really pornographic with really vulgar poses but her nipple’s covered so whatever! I feel a bit twisted on that.

Joshington Hosts: As the face of Replay’s Touch campaign, what are your go-to denim styles?

Stella Maxwell: Either a boyfriend jean, kinda loose jean, low waisted, maybe with a few tears on, like you know but not too contrived  like vintagey lookin- I love to buy vintage denim or I go for a skinny high waisted jean. High waisted is great because it tapers in your waist and stretchy denim sculps your arse.

JH: Who’s your like denim inspiration?

SM: Britney when she was double denim with Justin.

JH: What’s the worst hair style you have ever had?

SM: Ooh, I’ve had a bowl haircut which was pretty narly!

JH: What are your beauty product go-tos?

SM: I like a really good moisturizer and concealer is very important, I really like the Touche Éclat or the Laura Mercier concealers. I’m really about skin, once you have good skin and contour you’re cool and nothing else matters.

stella maxwell, stella maxwell nudity, stella maxwell naked, stella maxwell instagram, stella maxwell nipples, stella maxwell replay, stella maxwell interview

JH: What’s your most prized purchase of 2016?

SM: I bought a Gucci jacket that I’m obsessed with. It’s a black leather jackets with studs, lots of embroidery with beautiful flowers. I know that I will keep that for life!

JH: What’s your typical fitness regime like?

SM: I have a personal trainer in New York, and then in L.A I have a trainer too but in LA I try to go on more like hikes, get some fresh air, hang out with friends and kind of do some things more social and lately at night it’s not really exercise but going to play like ping pong or pool.

JH: How do you stay motivated to go to the gym and work out?

SM: My body is my work so that is my main motivation. Personally if I have a healthy body I have a healthy mind too.

stella maxwell, stella maxwell nudity, stella maxwell naked, stella maxwell instagram, stella maxwell nipples, stella maxwell replay, stella maxwell interview

JH: Is it important to you to surround yourself with strong women?

SM: I think who you hang out with really reflects a lot on you. I’m around so many people all the time that when I have my days off or like my down time I’m really selective, I want to really hang out with some people that I really love.

JH: Are there any models you really look up to?

SM: A lot of girls that I know right now work really hard and that’s inspiring in itself even my friend Bella Hadid or I don’t know like Taylor Hill. We’re all doing our thing and that’s empowering in itself and to see how we’re all kind of progressing and moving up as we all started on the same level.

The Shoes You WILL Be Wearing Next Season

Want the fast-track to a razor sharp, ridiculously hot, fresh new 2017 look? Think shoes first. From the cute micro-heel to super-cool sock-boots to fancy florals. Footwear is on fire as we head into spring.

So even if the rest of your look is relatively low key, the easiest way to test the most fashion forward trends is with a pair of new shoes. Here's our guide to the looks we know you'll love to wear.

The Micro Heel..

These were absolutely EVERYWHERE. So a definitely one to buy into. Think sci-fi Grandma a la Stella McCartney for the most out-there version of this shoe. But what we're loving the most is that this heel means we're kissing bye bye to the killer heel. Way chicer than the stiletto mainly because you can actually walk in them.

Stella McCartney, Dries Van Noten, Prada

The Fancy Flip Flop

Last season we went for masculine vibe when it came to sliders: chunky, comfy and very minimal. And we very much doubt that that Adidas sports style is going anywhere either. But the latest update is the fancy flip flip. Whether it's a slide or a thong situation, it’s all about making a statement. We saw florals AND sequins at Dolce and frayed edges at Stella Jean. If pretty beading isn’t your thing then look to Alexander Wang for more minimal approach with studding and a great PVC ankle strap. We're totally obsessed.

Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander Wang, Stella Jean

The Sock-Boot

Boots in summer? Yes, that is what we're saying. These are definitely for the fashion forward and not the faint-hearted.  If you dare to do the full all-in-one then look to Balenciaga for their tonal inspiration. Despite looking like a thigh high boot these are more like heels inside a pair of tights. For a more wearable look we loved Loewe's version. These will look super flattering with dresses and mid-length skirts come summer - especially when it rains!

Givenchy, Loewe, Balenciaga

The Fancy Floral Platform

When it comes to platforms for next season, boy, they are HUGE. And by that, we mean literally. Prepare to tower over your friends. In keeping with the 70’s obsession that's still strong, some even have wooden block heels. But the biggest update this season were the floral tapestry prints. Pretty, ditsy florals - either printed or embossed into the shoes - gave this shoe trend a slightly western vibe.

Sofia Vergara's son is a smokin' hotty...

We knew that Sofía Vergara had a 24-year-old son named Manolo Gonzalez Vergara, but we didn't realize just how smokin' hot he was.

The One App You Need For Finding The Perfect Bridesmaid Dress

In partnership with Snap Fashion

After the general hoopla and giddiness of the recent announcement of my brother-in-law’s engagement (congratulations Henry and Tina), my other sister-in-law, being rather concerned that she is going to be asked to be a bridesmaid, called me in a panic.

It turns out, she’s offered up my services, as Fashion Director and general taste-maker, to help with the task of finding the perfect bridesmaid dresses. My challenge is to make five grown women look good in the same shade and/or style of dress, hopefully in something they *might* consider wearing again. No pressure, then...

Buying your own wedding dress can be stressful enough, so imagine how overwhelming it can feel to find the perfect dress for your entire bridal party. From dealing with various personalities, shapes, sizes and different taste preferences, brides often find the process more difficult than they anticipated.

Read more: bridesmaid dresses the whole line-up will love

You want your friends and family to feel happy, comfortable, attractive and as excited about your wedding day as you are, not dreading it because you are making them wear a peach tulle dress inspired by Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind.

Who could forget that scene in 27 Dresses where Katherine Heigl flings open the doors of her overflowing wardrobe to reveal an assortment of bridesmaids dresses made up of sparkly mesh crinolines and badly-fitting satin corsets, each one being more comical and poofier than the last.

Or how about when Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City dressed her bridesmaids in totally different bold colours – incase you don’t remember, black, red and purple, Maybe that’s what sent Mr Big running in the other direction?

Read more: best bridesmaid shoes that'll help you complete the look

Now here’s the dilemma. Do you go for colour or shape? Answer: colour.

I suggest choosing one colour but in different styles, but you've got to think seriously about the colour. Blush and taupe maybe the ‘in’ bridesmaid dress colours right now, but they don’t suit every skin tone - they can easily wash some people out.

Top tip: If you’ve got a range of fair, olive and dark skin tones, go for a two-colour palette to please everyone. How about pink and a darker coral?

Bridesmaid dress inspo 1: Jerry Hall's daughters, Georgia May and Elizabeth Jagger, stole the show at her wedding to Rupert Murdoch when dressed in different shades of blue to compliment the bride’s dress.

Bridesmaid dress inspo 2: When model Molly Sims and the street style star Giovanna Battaglia both got married, each opted for shades of nude and soft pinks for their bridesmaids.

Bridesmaid dress inspo 3: The wedding of Victoria’s Secret model Anna Beatriz Barros this summer saw her Angel bridesmaids all wearing slightly different dresses in a tonal scale of pink hues. The effect of the group together looked pretty amazing in the photos.

Tina has had many ideas but inspiration finally came from a beautiful arrangement of flowers from florist Scarlett and Violet, in soft and similar subtle tones of pinks and lilacs.

This is where my Snap Fashion app came into play – open up the app, photograph the desired colour, search ‘dresses’ and let a sea of gorgeous gowns in the same shade appear before your eyes.  You pick the colour and fabric, then each girl can decide on the style most flattering for her body type. It's never been easier.

So whatever the other stresses of getting married are, they needn’t be your bridesmaids dresses.

The One App You Need For Finding The Perfect Bridesmaid Dress

9 Super Weird Beauty Trends That Became Totally Normal In 2016

1. Sheet Masks

Hitting celebs’ faces everywhere way back in December 2015, the arrival of sheet masks marked the beginning of the infamous (and totally instagrammable) #sheetmaskselfie.

Winging their way West from South Korea, they’re the simplest way to add an instant hit of moisture to your skin without mashing an avocado with some left over honey.

Ok, they might look a little like Hannibal meets Kim K post-surgery, but darn it they do the trick. Now in their second generation transforming from papery cut outs to bio-cellulose gel like creations, sheet masks have become our latest skincare staple.

Check out our edit of the best sheet masks, and if you’re feeling fancy indulge in Givenchy’s black lace version. Yup, sheet masks just got sexy.

2. Mental Nail Trends

You name it, we made a mani out of it.  First it was oh-so cosy sweater nails, perfect for a seasonal Jan mani to kick off the year. Next up, pom pom nails had us creating a brand new Pinterest board (and avoiding typing as much as possible) before furry nails took things to a whole new extreme. Like tiny beards for your nails, this might have been the Gucci furry loafer effect taken one step too far. But our favourite mental nail trend of 2016? Drum roll please… SUCCULENT NAILS!

Thought up by Australian artist Roz Borg, succulent nails are literally tiny succulent plants stuck to your nails with oasis glue so they actually grow while attached to your fingertips. Our mani is alive?! We’re not sure about the health and safety on this one.

3. Vampire Inspired Beauty

In a weird (and kind of creepy) turn of events 2016 became the year when beauty became obsessed with blood.

Whether it was Kim K’s gory Vampire Facial (where your own blood is re-injected back into your face for a ‘plumping’ effect), Rodial’s Dragon’s Blood night cream or niche perfume brand Blood Concept’s innovative scents designed to match your blood type, we couldn’t get enough of the red stuff.

4. Metallic Makeup

If you’ve been anywhere near Instagram this year, you’ll know we all went a bit crazy for metallic makeup. Previously allocated purely for our sexy robot costume and Christmas, gold, glitter and everything shiny hit our day to day makeup routine.

From extreme strobing and glitter lips to our Insta-obsession with Sigma’s iridescent Lip Switch and Pat McGrath’s crazy shiny MetalMorphosis005 kit, lips, eyes, ears… everything, got a molten metallic overhaul and the woman from Goldfinger became our new #beautyinspo.

5. Cushions

The comfiest sounding beauty trend of 2016, cushions became our number one beauty tool du jour.

Creating a whole new category of foundation for us to get obsessed with, cushion compacts became the latest Korean import to provide perfect skin AND total convenience. Trust, if you’ve ever done your makeup in the back of a cab, a cushion compact is a lifesaver. From BB creams and blushers to multi-coloured colour correctors, cushions became the new creams.

And you can forget trad makeup brushes, this year we went crazy for the BeautyBlender. Take one egg shaped sponge, make it pink and put it on Instagram and you’ve got a worldwide beauty phenomenon.

The latest update? The Silisponge. A silicon pad not unlike the one we popped in our bras in Year 10, the Silisponge is the latest way to nail that flawless, Insta-perfect complexion.

6. Hidden Rainbow Hair

First there was pastel hair, then there was opal hair, but this year we discovered hidden rainbow hair and our brains actually exploded. We die.

Pioneered by super cool East London hair kids Not Another Salon, hidden rainbow hair does what it says on the tin - it hides a unicorn-worthy rainbow inside the centre of your normal hair colour. Which means you can embrace your inner My Little Pony whilst keeping your new ‘do SFW. The. Dream. We’ve genuinely never gotten over it.

7. Face Flowers

When makeup legend Val Garland  sent models down Preen’s SS17 runway with real-life pressed flowers stuck all over their faces, our inner girly girl immediately lost it.

Taking the phrase English Rose super literally, Val pressed dried daisies, cornflowers and forget-me-nots onto model’s collarbones, foreheads and lips. A rosebud pout anyone?

8. Snail Slime

Yup, you heard us, snail slime, or secretion, if you will, was 2016’s skincare ingredient gaining a whole load of industry hype. Added to sheet masks, moisturisers and serums everywhere, snail slime actually has major skincare cred.

Known for it’s regenerative properties (did you ever see a snail slither it’s way over the bare ground with a cut or bruise? Think about it.), snail slime promotes skin repair which means your skin produces new skin cells at a way faster rate whiiiiich to you and me means fresher, plumper, baby soft skin.

So it’s hooray for the snails!

9. Ear Makeup

It’s totally a thing. An area of our faces previously unpopular with makeup artists, ears have made a high fashion comeback for 2016 with Louis Vuitton and Anthony Vaccarello both painting models’ ears for their SS17 shows.

Graphic, inky black lobes took to the runway at Vaccarello where makeup pro Tom Pecheux used black liquid liner to create a second-skin ear cuff vibe. At Louis Vuitton, queen of metallic makeup Pat McGrath painted the odd ear sci-fi silver whilst makeup artist Violette adorned lobes with gold paint for a CR Fashion Book shoot and somehow made classic gold hoops even better.

WATCH: The 411 On Doctor Who Christmas Special!

The Doctor Who Christmas special is almost as much of a seasonal staple as the Turkey, The Queen and Brussel Sprouts.

This time around The Time Lord is joined by a temporary companion played by the divine Charity Wakefield, who sits down with Joshington Hosts to give the low down on everything you need to know. Spoiler alert, ‘it’s really, REALLY good! I know you are not supposed to say that about your own work but it is.’

Playing a character that is serving up Teri Hatcher 90s vibes, Charity describes the episode entitled, ‘The Return of Doctor Mysterio’ as, ‘touching on superhero territory. There’s a character called The Ghost who is loosely based on Superman. It’s a similar idea of someone being a superhero but actually having a double life. My character is very involved in his double life. I play Lucy Fletcher who is a bit like Lois Lane, she’s an investigative journalist living in New York.’ We are obsessed already!

Now obviously the actress couldn’t reveal much more about the story line but it didn’t stop Charity letting us in on a few set secrets. ‘It is very immersive, what’s amazing is that the whole thing is set in New York but everything was built in Cardiff. Within five days it went from a snowy scene on the Thames to a New York apartment, which my character lived in… It looked totally real. So when you are on that set looking out the window it looks like New York, it sounds like New York and when you walk around the flat and pull out a book from the book case it’s a real book that someone has actually taken the time to think my character would read.’ Talk about an impressive attention to detail right there!

But what was it like filming with many people’s guilty crush, Peter Capaldi? ‘He is really kind, he’s really nice. He took me around the set and introduced me to people.’ Talk about guided tour goals! Plus he didn’t stop there, the Doctor himself showed Charity the Tardis- now that sounds racy!

Whilst Peter Capaldi has recently said he has no plans to stop playing The Time Lord any time soon, could there ever be a female doctor? Charity seems to think so, ‘absolutely! I am almost sad that I have done the show now because I scared that prohibits me from even being considered for that role. But maybe she was secretly Doctor Who any way?’ Watch this space team!

Whilst we know the Christmas assistant is up to, here is where some of the companions are now…

Jenna Coleman, Clara Oswald (2012-2015)

Coleman’s career has gone from strength to strength since leaving the show. The former Emmerdale actress (YES THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED) has gone on to drown on the Titanic in Julian Fellowes adaption of the tragic tale and managed to get herself a nice new tiara AND an equally fine looking new boyfriend in Victoria.

Karen Gillan, Amy Pond (2008-2013)

After playing the assistant to Matt Smith (JEALOUS. MUCH!) Karen is currently filming the new Jumanji film with the likes of The Rock and Kevin Hart having completed work on Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume Two. So it’s safe to say someone is doing well!

Billie Piper, Rose Tyler (2005-2010)

We are still praying that Billie will bring the honey back to the bee and launch a pop comeback. But in the meantime she’s busy winning serious acting awards, after being crowned the Best Actress at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for her devastating turn as a woman plagued by her inability to have a child in Yerma. But if Paris Hilton launched a musical return, Piper could do too, because we want you TO, Bille babes!

Now don’t go anywhere before you see Charity’s dalek impression in the above video and Whovians assemble because we put the actress’s Doctor Who knowledge to the test.

The 9 Most Unputdownable Books Of 2016

Faithful

Faithful

As the year comes to an end, it’s always nice to reflect back on the books that really left an impact and made 2016 such a great year for literature. Here is a list of some of the best books that our friends at the Girly Book Club loved. Good news is that if you didn’t get around to picking up a copy – they will still be on the shelves in 2017.

1. The Girls by Emma Cline
If this title isn’t ringing any bells on its own, then the cover will – it’s all anyone could talk about – and for good reason. Set in Northern California at the close of the 1960s we meet Evie Boyd, a teenager on the verge of self-discovery. Then in comes Suzanne, an older influential friend that leads her down all the wrong roads and the girls find themselves in a soon to be infamous cult that will push them towards a fate they could never imagine.

2. Faithful by Alice Hoffman
This is one of my favourite books this year because of the erratic story line. Shelby, the protagonist is born in Long Island with a silver spoon in her mouth and a bright future ahead. Until a fateful day when she and her best friend get into a car accident while Shelby’s at the wheel – her friend is comatose and kept alive by the help of machines while Shelby’s bright future turns into a shallow hell built on guilt and remorse. A quick but powerful read.

3. A House Without Windows by Nadia Hashimi
Hashimi is a break-out artist with four books under her belt all written since 2014; all with incredible reviews. Where she finds the time is anyone’s best guess as she’s also a Dr and mother of four. But find it she does and each of her novels is prize-worthy in their own right. A House Without Windows is her newest triumph. Not yet out in paperback but well worth the investment for the hardcover.

House Without Windows

4. Behind Closed Doors by BA Paris
As far as psychological thrillers are concerned BA Paris has all the right ingredients from split-personalities to hidden rooms, this one will have you guessing and everything you think you know will be turned upside down. An intriguing break-out novel for this French novelist. Her second novel, The Breakdown is due out early 2017.

Behind Closed Doors

5. Swear On This Life by Renee Carlino
If you only pick up one of the novels in this list, choose this one. I seldom come across a book worthy of a one-sit reading but this was exactly that. I could not put it down. Meet Emiline, a writer with a troubled past, the details of which very few people are privy – but when her roommate gives her a copy of the newest book she is entranced by the story of Emerson and Jackson. It hits way too close to home as she realises she’s reading her very own childhood – clearly written by her first love with whom she lost touch 12 years before. So very well crafted, you’ll be sad when you hit the last page.

6. The Wangs vs the World by Jade Chang
If you’re looking for a good laugh, look no further – this story is full of good humour and outright belly laughs as we tag along with Charles Wang and his family on a cross-country road trip after they lose everything in the financial crisis. A riches to rags story that looks at immigration in America and how you have to give it all up to find what’s really important.

The Wangs Vs The World

7. The Secret Wife by Gill Paul
A thoughtfully imagined historical novel set in both 1914 Russia and present day America where two worlds collide over an impossible secret. Love, romance, royalty, money and family all interwoven to take you on a journey across the map.

Secret Wife

8. Heart of Stone by James Ziskin
An unimaginable accident sends two men, seemingly unconnected to a strange coincidental death, but all the clues point to something amiss. Ellie Stone, a young reporter decides to take it upon herself to find out exactly what happened. One thing is clear, no one is interested in answering her questions and she soon realises nothing is as it should be.

Heart of Stone

9. TED BOOKS
TED, (technology, entertainment and design) a not for profit organisation released several box sets this year and the “completist set” is well worth the price tag. This group of ten books covers everything from architecture to business, space travel to love including: The Terrorist’s Son, The Mathematics of Love, The Art of Stillness, The Future of Architecture in 100 Buildings, Beyond Measure, Judge This, How We’ll Live on Mars, Why We Work, The Laws of Medicine, and Follow Your Gut.
