Don’t freak out - of course I’ll keep the secrets… I mean I do now own the badge so it seems only fair to obey the laws of the wizarding world — no-one wants to end up in Azkaban (unless Draco Malfoy’s there, then maybe I’d consider it). However, risking my wand rights, I’ve decided that since watching the truly magical play, it's very key to be on top of your game at all times. So my fellow wizards and muggles out there, here are my top 8 key things to watch out for when watching Harry Potter And The Cursed Child.
1. Be prepared
The total running time for the play is five hours, which is broken up into two sittings. If you’re a true Harry Potter fan then timing is not a problem. I was lucky enough to watch a special gala performance, which meant watching two parts in one day (with a two hour break for lunch). I even considered watching Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1&2 when I got home… Don’t judge.
2. The storyline
The brilliant new play, written by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, picks up from the last Harry Potter book — The Deathly Hallows Part 2. (You know that scene in the last film, where Harry, Ron and Hermione are all made to look middle-aged surrounded by their children on platform 9 3/4?). Without giving too much away the story follows that of love, family and how friendship can conquer all. 'While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places'. The play also brings in new and rather unexpected characters, so it’s important to stay on track with the storyline.
3. The rising stars
Watch out for rising stars Sam Clemmet (Albus Potter) and Anthony Boyle (Scorpius Malfoy). These two were totally fantastic, their friendship shining through on stage, while embracing their roles brilliantly.
4. Ron Weasley and Hermione’s relationship
Actor Noma Dumezweni (Hermione Granger) and Paul Thornley’s (Ron Weasley) relationship on stage was adorable and hilarious, with a lot of brilliant one-liners from Ron thoughout the play. For Harry Potter fans out there it's basically the relationship we all wanted to see happen, so it was kinda exciting getiing to see the characters finally together after Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2, and seeing them with their daughter Rose Granfer (played by actress Cherrelle Skeete).
5. The set
Unlike many big West End plays this play has a set like no other. Designed by Tony award-winning set designer Christine Jones, the set is totally unique and highly imaganative. She made Hogwarts come to life on stage so perfectly, it was almost spooky. Jones told Pottermore: 'There’s just this feeling that we’re working with people we love, on something we love, for people we love. And there’s a lot of emotions that have become buried within the fabric on the making of this.’
6. The Magic Tricks
The cast’s spell-bounding performance of theatre magic tricks and special effects is down to Olivier- Award winnning movement director Steven Hoggett, who said: 'Acting in Harry Potter And The Cursed Child isn’t just about learning the lines, but also a huge physical challenge'. The actors performance was utterly captivating, and it will leave you saying 'how did they do that?!' or 'noo that can't be possible!'.
7 .The Costumes
Costume designer Katarina Lindsay is responsible for those fabulous capes and all-round magical costumes in the production. Lindsay has designed costumes for the National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company and The Young Vic. Lindsay stated: 'I was looking for a natural visual progression with this new story plus any ways to add individuality within the uniform'.
Sam Clemmet (Albus Potter) and Anthony Boyle (Scorpius Malfoy)
'Sometimes, your job is simply putting the new Hogwarts cloaks through their paces'
